Don’t limit your spring cleaning to your closets—consider your home’s curb appeal when it’s time to start with your springtime renovation projects. There are many ways to freshen up your home’s exterior, and brand new windows and doors is a huge step in the right direction. In addition to increasing your home’s value and energy efficiency, replacement windows and doors look beautiful, giving your home an instant pick-me-up.
If you want to give a window and door replacement extra “oomph” with additional curb appeal enhancements, here are some of our favorite tips—these are also great ways to spruce up your home on a budget!
Symmetry
Using your front door as the focal point, create symmetry with floral arrangements, potted plants, and light fixtures—like sconces—installed on either side of your door. We particularly love the look of stylish light fixtures, which guide guests to the entrance and enhance security.
New Fixtures
Think of all of the little things you can replace on your front door to give it a whole new look. New hardware can breathe new life into your front door—add new house numbers, a kickplate, mailbox, handle, or mail slot in a new finish.
Outdoor Lighting
Don’t limit yourself to porch lighting—consider installing lighting along the front walkway for added security. Incorporate the surrounding landscaping to highlight your most beautiful trees and shrubs.
Landscaping
Trees, shrubs, and flowers are beautiful accents to your home—put them front and center with an elegant front-yard landscaping project. If your front yard is difficult to plant, or if you don’t have a large front yard, create a container garden with ready-made containers from your favorite greenhouse. In early spring, prune your existing flower beds and pull weeds to prepare for new plantings and recurring growth; upgrading your border with new stone is another way to get a fresh new front yard look.
Another great idea is to plant window boxes. These are a great option for any home, but are particularly nice for homeowners who have limited planting space in the front yard but who still want to welcome guests with fresh flowers.
Shutters, Trim, and Moldings
Homeowners on a budget can add architectural interests with moldings which draw attention to the front door, while trim and shutters function much the same way around windows. Shutters also help control ventilation and light—great during those hot Houston summers!
