It seemed like summer might never end here in Houston, but this last week has finally brought cooler temperatures. With these cooler temperatures comes a new set of energy efficiency concerns, as we move from keeping cool to staying warm and cozy. You have certainly noticed the chill in the air when venturing outside, but if you are experiencing a chill inside your home it may be time to evaluate your windows and doors to determine whether they are letting in drafts.
You can perform a few quick tests to check how well your windows and doors are forming a seal against the weather.
• Tactile inspection: It’s as simple as asking yourself if you can feel cold air coming in through a window or a door. Is it drastically, noticeably cooler when you are seated next to a window or an exterior door?
• Visual inspection: Take a candle and light it, then place it next to the seams between your windows and doors and the wall. If the flame flickers or bends, this indicates a gap which is allowing air to leak. Is there condensation between the window panes? This is another indicator of a leak and should be addressed.
• Audible inspection: If the wind is whipping the treetops, listen closely near windows and exterior doors. With the television and radio turned off, you might be able to hear a whistling sound, which would also indicate a leak.
